DENVER, Colo.: Regis University softball took two wins over RMAC competitors UC-Colorado Springs Friday in day one's doubleheader. The Rangers advance their overall record to 17-23 and their RMAC record to 16-14.
The Rangers jumped on the Mountain Lions from inning one, shutting their opponents down and then putting one on the board themselves. Freshman Rachel Illias started off the Rangers with a single to third base. She was advanced to second by junior Shannon Massine's bunt single. Freshman Taylor Wilcox singled up the middle to earn the first RBI of the day.
UCCS answered in the next inning with one run of their own, before the Rangers scored four runs in the third. Senior Maegan Cooley put up two RBIs during the inning and sophomore Breanna Backlund and senior Cassie Long each put up one themselves.
The women scored two more in the fourth and one in the fifth to put eight runs on for the home team. UCCS scored another two runs in the fourth to finish the game with three runs. The final score of the game: Regis 8, UCCS 3.
Junior Shannon Massine went 3-for-4 with one RBI and senior Maegan Cooley put up two RBIs for the Rangers while going 2-for-2 with one walk at the plate. Freshman Rachel Illias had two hits herself and four other Ranger women put up one hit apiece.
Senior Nikki Haberkorn commanded the circle for the complete game, striking out two and allowing eight hits.
The Rangers took the second game over the Mountain Lions, 2-0 in seven innings.
Illias started Regis off again in the first inning, by singling to third base. She was moved over by Massine who put down a SAC bunt down the first base side, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Wilcox reached on an error by the first baseman that would score Illias.
The women scored one more run in third inning, after Backlund singled up the middle and stole second. Wilcox singled to score Backlund and earn another RBI.
Wilcox went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Backlund had a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and Illias put in a 2-for-2 performance with one walk.
Freshman Sydney Gaffin earned the win after slingling 6.2 innings. She struck out two, while allowing four hits and four walks in 29 batters faced.
The Rangers will continue the series Saturday, April 14th at 12:00 and 2:00 PM at the Regis softball field in Denver, Colo. The team will honor seniors Natalie Adami, Maegan Cooley, Nikki Haberkorn and Cassie Long in between games.
