Rangers Open RMAC Play with Two Losses at Home
DENVER, Colo.: Regis softball opened Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play today at home against Adams State University and Black Hills State University. The Rangers went up early in both contests, but lost the lead late in the game, giving them two losses on the day.
Regis scored two in the first inning against Adams State to start the first game. Sophomore Rachel Illias led off with a single up the middle. Senior Shannon Massine followed by reaching on a fielding error by the Grizzly shortstop. Fellow senior Bre Backlund doubled to left center to score both Illias and Massine.
The Grizzlies put one on the board in the third and the fourth to even the score and added two in the fifth to snag the 4-3 lead they would maintain for the win.
Sophomore Sydney Gaffin went all seven innings. She striking out one and allowing nine hits.
The Rangers scored first in the third inning with two outs against Black Hills State University. Massine reached on an error by the shortstop, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch by the Yellow Jacket right-hander. Then Backlund walked to put runners on first and third.
Sophomore Taylor Wilcox sent a grounder to the shortstop and reached on a muffed ball by the first baseman that would score both Massine and Backlund.
BHSU put one on in the next inning to put the score at 2-1 Rangers and remain that way until the seventh inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Yellow Jackets draw a big rally and scored two runs on long singles to the outfield.
Backlund put a double to deep center field in the bottom of the inning in an attempt to create a Ranger effort, but the Yellow Jackets shut the door with their defense and grab a 3-2 win over RU.
Freshman righty Rachelle Knudson went 6.1 innings, allowed only three hits and two runs while snagging her first strike out of the season. Gaffin followed up with one strike out and four batters faced in the seventh.
Backlund had a big .667 at the plate on the day after going 4-6 with three doubles, one triple and a walk throughout both games. After today, the second baseman hosts a .960 slugging percentage on the season.
Pending weather, Regis will continue RMAC play at home tomorrow, February 24 against ASU and BHSU at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively.
