SILVER CITY, N.M.: Regis softball dropped two to start their series with Western New Mexico University.
Regis went up in the first game 5-1 by the second inning, putting two on the board in the first and three in the second to start their trip.
The Mustangs earned the lead in the fifth inning, going up 7-5 over the Rangers. Regis put in a big rally in the seventh to even the score in an attempt to send the game into extra innings. WNMU put another on in the eighth despite the Rangers best efforts, snagging the win in seven.
New Mexico grabbed an early lead in the second game by going up 4-2 in the second inning, but again the Rangers were ready and willing to put up a fight.
With the score 5-2 Western heading into the sixth, the Rangers warmed up their bats and grabbed two more runs. They were shut down in the seventh by the Mustangs to close out the day with the score of the second game 5-4.
Freshman Rachelle Knudson started the second game and allowed one hit before Hull came in to relieve the right-hander. Hull struck out one and allowed five hits on the day.
Sophomore Rachel Illias ended with three hits and one RBI throughout, while seniors Shannon Massine and Bre Backlund had two hits apiece, Backlund with an RBI. Sophomore Taylor Wilcox also put up two hits for the Rangers with two RBIs between the games.
