SILVER CITY, N.M.: Western New Mexico finished their sweep of Regis softball (1-16, 0-6) today with a pair of victories in Silver City, N.M. The Rangers dropped the first game 9-1 in five innings and the second 8-4 in seven.
WNMU started the day going up 4-0 over RU by the third inning. The Rangers scored their first run of the day in the fourth inning when junior Sam Talmich homered to right field. Four other Rangers had hits during the game.
Sophomore Sydney Gaffin (0-9) threw 3.1 innings, allowing six hits during her performance. Freshman Nicole Hull allowed four hits in her 1.1 innings and fellow freshman Rachelle Knudson faced one batter.
New Mexico put two runs on the board in the first, second and fourth innings to go up 6-0 in the second game. Regis crossed four runs themselves in a big fifth inning to try and close the gap.
The Rangers started the inning with a homerun to left field by sophomore Beth Petersen. Senior Bre Backlund picked up an RBI in the inning on a ground out to the second baseman, scoring sophomore Brianna Bogdajewicz who had reached on a walk.
The Mustangs grabbed two insurance runs in the sixth, going up 8-4 where they would finish out the game in seven innings.
Freshman duo Knudson and Hull saw the mound once again. Knudson allowed six hits in 1.2 innings and Hull struck out five and allowed five hits in her 4.1 innings.
The Rangers will host Colorado Mesa on Saturday and Sunday, March 8 and 9 next week for their next RMAC games.
