Regis Women Send Seniors out in Style with 81-72 Win
Denver, Colo.: (By Dylan Docker) Seniors Kari Ameling and Bri Simbeck took the Regis Fieldhouse court for the last time Saturday night against Chadron State. Following a pre-game ceremony honoring the two seniors, the Rangers (10-15, 8-11 RMAC) took care of business with an 81-72 win over the Eagles (8-15, 8-11 RMAC).
The Rangers took immediate control in the first half with four early points from Ameling. Sophomore forward Tae'lor Purdy also provided a spark for the Regis offense, allowing the home team to open up a nine-point lead with 7:11 to play.
Purdy would lead the Rangers in the half with eight points. Regis maintained control throughout the first half to bring a 33-27 advantage into the locker room after 20 minutes.
Ameling took charge for Regis in the second half, scoring six more points in the first five minutes to protect the home lead. The Rangers then posted a 15-0 run to put the Eagles in a deep hole. Junior forward Miranda Martine
scored six points in that span.
Chadron State began to step up late in regulation. A 19-7 run from the Eagles cut the Regis lead to five with 8:54 remaining, but the Rangers refused to yield command.
Sophomore guard Brandi Collins
powered the Regis offense, leading the home team with 15 points in the second half. Her efforts, on top of an efficient overall attack by the Regis offense, led to the 81-72 win.
Collins led the Rangers Saturday night with 21 points in her 35 minutes of play. She rounded out an effective game with three total rebounds and a steal.
If Ameling was feeling the emotions of Senior Night, she certainly didn't let it show. The senior post from Greeley, Colorado picked up seven total rebounds to lead the team and scored 13 points.
Purdy and Martine also scored in double-digits for the Rangers. Purdy ended up with 17 points and three steals, while Martine picked up 10 points and collected three total rebounds.
The Regis women will head to New Mexico Highlands University on February 17 for a Friday night match-up with the Cowgirls. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
