Denver, Colo.: The Regis Lacrosse team used a
stonch defense to defeat Shippensburg University 6-4 on a warm and
windy day. Regis had six different people score the six
goals, while goalkeeper Brittany Farniok registered seven saves for
the win.
Shippensburg (0-1) got on the board first just under 10 minutes
into the first half. Regis responded 10 minutes later when
freshman AriAnna McDonald scored off an assist from Carly
Wagner. Regis (2-0) scored two more goals over the next two
minutes to take a 3-1 lead. Shippensburg scored 28
seconds later, but freshman Kate Liddle responded with 6:20 left in
the half to give the Rangers a 4-2 lead at half.
Shippensburg's Beth Long scored two goals in the first 4:33 of
the second half to pull the Lady Raiders even with Regis. The
Regis defense then buckled down and shutout Shippensburg the rest
of the way and scored twice, once by senior Julia Ostberg and once
by sophomore Kelsi Goings. Ostberg's goal proved to be the
game winner.
Freshmen Morgan Taylor and Wagner were the other two Rangers to
garner goals on the day. Regis outshot Shippensburg 20-15 and
were able to control 24 ground balls to just 17 for the Lady
Raiders.
Defensively, senior Ashley Beauchemin led all players with 10
caused turnovers and six ground balls.
Regis will host St. Andrews Presbyterian on Saturday afternoon,
with game time set for 3 PM.
