Career-High 25 Kills from Christy Henzgen Not Enough for Rangers in Heartbreaking Loss to Colorado Mines

Box Score

Denver, Colo.: After winning the first two sets and leading set number three 24-22, the Regis Rangers looked to move past Colorado Mines.  However, the Orediggers had other ideas as they comeback to beat Regis 3-2 (16-25, 22-25, 30-25, 25-21, 15-10) in a heart-breaking match.

The match was very important in RMAC seeding but maybe more importantly in NCAA regional rankings.  Coming into the weekend, Colorado Mines was ranked eighth in the central region, while Regis was right behind in ninth.  The top eight teams in the region will make the NCAA Tournament.

Regis (14-8, 9-4 RMAC) got off to a red-hot start.  They hit .619 in set number one connecting on 14 kills on 21 attempts with just one error.  The Rangers cooled off in set two to the tune of .178, but Colorado Mines (17-5, 10-3 RMAC) were cooler hitting at a .085 clip.

Regis couldn't close out the Orediggers in the third set and at the point when Mines won, you could feel the momentum shift.  Regis cut the lead to 20-17 late in the fourth set before Oredigger head coach Jamie Skadeland called a timeout.  Mines was then able to reel off three straight points en route to the 25-21 victory.

The fifth set was just as frustrating for the Rangers as after going ahead 7-4 on a service ace by Henzgen.  Skadeland again called a timeout and it proved to be great timing.  The Orediggers came out of the timeout and scored eight of the next nine points to take a 12-8 victory and were able to sideout for the 15-10 victory.

Henzgen had a career-high 25 kills on a career-high 66 attempts.  She was also second on the team with 15 digs.  Senior Jessica Howe had 16 kills and five blocks, while freshman Sage Martinson went off defensively with a career-high 30 digs.

Sophomore Caitlin McDonnell had a good game hitting at .533 clip with nine kills in 15 attacks with just one error.  She also led all players with seven total blocks, helping the Rangers to a total of 17.

Senior Devin Eckhardt had a season-high 57 assists to go along with nine digs.  Sophomore Jordan Hughes had 10 digs.

Regis will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon in the final home match of the season for Regis and for five seniors, there final home match ever.  The Rangers will play host to UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
