Golden, Colo.: The 10th-ranked Regis University
men's soccer team went into today's matchup with top-ranked
Colorado Mines very confident and rightly so as the Rangers were
able to use two first half goals and hold the Orediggers off late
in the 2-1 victory. This is the first time in Regis men's
soccer history with a win over the top ranked team in the
nation
Regis, now 12-1-3 overall and 8-1-3 in the RMAC, got on the
board first with 16:59 gone in the first half when freshman Nduoma
Chilaka was able to score when Colorado Mines couldn't clear the
ball and Chilaka was able to put the ball in from the top of the
box. Just over 21 minutes later, the Rangers got a goal from
junior Ben
Buhler when sophomore Patrick Freeman
took a corner kick, one of six for the Rangers on the game, and
Buhler was able to score his third goal of the season.
The Rangers still led 2-0 when just under nine minutes into the
second half Tesho Akindele scored his 17th goal of the season for
Colorado Mines (14-1-1, 11-1-1 RMAC) to cut the lead in
half.
Regis was able to hold the potent Oredigger attack in check the
rest of the way. A big moment in the game happened when Regis
fouled an Oredigger in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. With
10:13 left in the match, Chike Sullivan attempted the penalty kick
and was stoned by Ranger freshman goalkeeper Doug
Passalaqua.
The defense proved too much for either team the rest of the way
out as Mines attempted two more shots and Regis just one
more.
"This is a great win for us, stated head coach Tony
McCall. "The guys fought hard and I am very proud of their
effort. With all regards to the past Regis men's soccer
teams, I believe this is the biggest victory in the program's
history."
Passalaqua had four saves in the match, while the Rangers were
out-shot 20-13 in the match.
Regis will come back home to take on Colorado Christian on
Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
