Golden, Colo.: The 2010 Regis men's soccer season came to an end today in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the hands of third-ranked Colorado Mines 5-1. The Rangers end their season with a 14-3-4 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
Regis struck first when senior Nathan Kafer volleyed in a ball on a cross from freshman Ben Fredrickson for his 45th and final career goal. His 45 goals surpasses Lance Snodgrass who scored 44 goals from 2000-03.
#3 Colorado Mines got on the board in the 11th minute when Chike Sullivan scored from 25 yards out. CSM (17-1-2) scored two more goals over the next two and a half minutes and again in the 32nd minute to take a 4-1 lead at halftime.
Regis had some good chances in the second half, including a penalty kick sailed high but the only scoring was a goal by Alex Nass of Colorado Mines, his second of the afternoon.
Regis took 10 shots compared to 11 for Colorado Mines, while the Rangers, who lead the RMAC, had five corner kicks and Mines six.
Three seniors, Kafer, midfielder Sergio Beltran and defender Gary Cole finish out their Regis career.
Colorado Mines will now take on Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas on Sunday.
