Box Score Silver City, N.M.: The Regis men's basketball team led for all but 2:31 of the first half but unfortunately for the Rangers basketball has two halves as the Rangers fell 70-55 to Western New Mexico in the first RMAC game of the season.
Lance Korell hit a three-pointer with 18:14 remaining in the second half to give Regis (2-2, 0-1 RMAC) a 31-25 lead, but that is when Western New Mexico (1-4, 1-0 RMAC) went on a run. The Mustangs went on a 17-4 over the next six minutes and did not relinquish the lead and Regis could only get as close as four points in the 70-55 loss.
The Rangers were hurt by 19 turnovers and hit just eight-of-16 from the free throw line. The Mustangs attempted 26 free throws, sinking 23 of them.
Senior Curtis Mitchell led all Rangers with 18 points, while Korell chipped in with 16, connecting on three three-point baskets. Freshman Jon Conley came off the bench to score 11 points. Junior Chris Johansen led all players with eight rebounds, while sophomore Slobodan Jovanovic grabbed seven caroms.
Regis will stay in New Mexico and take on New Mexico Highlands on Saturday evening.
