Denver, Colo.: Regis University and UC-Colorado Springs came in with the same overall record, and it showed as neither team led by more than eight points. Regis was able to hold on late in their second straight one-point victory 67-66.
Regis (5-9, 2-8 RMAC) went ahead 16-11 on a layup by junior Myron Sanders with 11:22 remaining in the first half. UC-Colorado Springs (4-10, 2-8 RMAC) then went on a 13-0 run over the next three and a half minutes to take a 24-16 lead with 7:54 remaining.
Regis kept chipping away at the lead and found them selves down 32-26 with 4:44 remaining. A layup by junior Chris Johansen at the 3:21 mark cut it to four points and two possessions later senior Curtis Mitchell hit a three pointer to cut it to one with 1:49 remaining. Junior Slobodan Jovanovic hit a layup just 36 seconds later to cap off a 7-0 run and take a 33-32 lead and eventually went into halftime ahead 35-34.
The first half was a great indication of how close the second half was going to be. The Rangers had a five-point lead late in the second half, the biggest of the half and after two free throws by Mitchell led 64-59 with 3:39 remaining in the game.
A jumper by Ben Feilmeier cut the lead to three and a three pointer by Luke Hristou tied the game at 64 with just 2:20 left. UCCS took a short lead with 1:07 to go as Damar Hill hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to move ahead 65-64.
Johansen then answered on the other end when he got a great pass from senior Stevie Ledesma and took a 14-foot jump shot that splashed home with 55 seconds remaining. Ledesma then fouled Hill and again he made just 1-of-2 to tie the game at 66.
The Rangers hurried up the court and Ledesma saw an opening but was unable to hit the layup, but Johnny-on-the-spot, freshman Patrick Wheatlake came up with his biggest rebound of his career and was subsequently fouled with 34 seconds left. He calmly went to the line and sank the first, but the seconds caromed off the rim.
Brent Jones missed a layup on the other end and an offensive rebound and putback was no good by JT Isaac. However, Jones was able to gather the rebound. Regis Head Coach Lonnie Porter called his final timeout with 10 seconds remaining.
The Mountain Lions played for the last shot and with four seconds remaining Feilmeier took an off-balance jump shot from about 10 feet that was a little right and then rebounded by Johansen for his 10th rebound of the night.
Johansen missed both free throws and UCCS called timeout with 1.1 remaining on the clock. The long inbounds pass went awry and the Rangers came away with the 67-66 victory.
Regis had 15 second chance points off of 13 offensive rebounds. They were also able to outscore the Mountain Lion bench 32-24 and hit 22-of-27 from the free throw line.
Conley went just 4-of-6 from the field but had 11 free throw attempts connecting on 10 of them. He snatched six rebounds including five offensive. Mitchell had a quiet 16 points on 5-for-11 shooting and 2-for-4 from deep.
Johansen just missed his second double-double in a row with nine points to go along with his 10 rebounds. Wheatlake came off the bench to score a career-high seven points, including a 5-for-6 performance at the line.
Regis will take this momentum into tomorrow night's RMAC-contest with CSU-Pueblo who fell 67-56 to Metro State tonight. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Regis Fieldhouse.
