Denver, Colo.: Playing without leading scorer Curtis Mitchell proved to be too much as the Rangers only mustered 54 points in a 70-54 loss to CSU-Pueblo.
Regis (5-10, 2-9 RMAC) jumped out first when junior Chris Johansen, who led the Rangers with 17 points, scored on a layup just 17 seconds in to the game. The lead went back and forth until the Rangers went on a 6-0 run capped by a layup by freshman Jon Conley to give the Rangers a 17-12 lead with 11:27 remaining in the first half.
CSU-Pueblo (7-8, 4-7 RMAC) then went on a 11-0 run over the next four minutes to go ahead 23-17 with 7:36 left. The Thunderwolves eventually increased their lead to 13 with 3:19 to go in the first half and went into halftime with a 33-24 lead.
The Rangers just couldn't get on track offensively, but when they did, like when they cut it to 39-34 on a jumper by junior Lance Korell with 14:59 remaining, there defense failed them. The Thunderwolves then scored nine of the next 12 points to go ahead 48-37 with 11:45 left in the game.
The Rangers again cut the lead to five with 7:17 remaining on a layup by Conley. The Thunderwolves were again able to slice through the defense and increased their lead with a 5-0 run to 10 with 6:06 remaining. CSUP put it away by outscoring the Rangers 15-6 over the last 5:56 of the game to win 70-54.
Johansen also collected a game-high nine rebounds as the Rangers held their own on the boards. Regis hit just 3-of-18 from long range and shot 40 percent overall compared to 52.9 percent for CSU-Pueblo.
Korell chipped in with 13 points and Conley came off the bench to supply 11. Senior Stevie Ledesma getting his first start in place of Mitchell had eight points, four assists and four steals in 36 minutes.
Regis will be on the road next week as they travel to Alamosa, Colo. to take on Adams State on Friday night at 8:00 p.m.
