Rangers Hit Season-High Nine Three Pointers in 68-51 Victory over Western State

Denver, Colo.: The Regis men's basketball team smothered the Western State offense into just 35.6 percent shooting and outrebounded the taller Mountaineers 35-31 in their 68-51 victory tonight.

Regis (6-13, 3-12 RMAC) broke their four-game skid while allowing just 51 points, the second lowest by a Ranger opponent this season.  The Rangers limited Western State (5-15, 4-11 RMAC) to just 29.2 percent shooting in the first half and went into the locker room with a 32-17 lead.

The Rangers led 16-13 with 7:17 remaining after a dunk by Jordan Adams.  Head Coach Lonnie Porter called a quick timeout and what a timeout it was.  Following the 30-second timeout the Rangers as over the next six minutes the Rangers reeled off 16 straight points to take a 32-13 lead with 1:24 left in the first half.

The Rangers had 15 2nd chance points in the first half compared to just two for Western State.

Western State really never threatened in the second half and only got as close as 12 late in the game and closed out the game with the 68-51 victory.

Regis shot 44.4 percent from the field and connected on a season-high nine three-point baskets.  

The Rangers got 23 points from Curtis Mitchell on a season-high four three-point baskets.  He was 8-for-16 from the field.  Freshman Jon Conley came off the bench to supply 12 points and three offensive rebounds.  Senior Stevie Ledesma had a great game with eight points, six rebounds and a career-high six steals.

Junior Chris Johansen flirted with a triple double with eight points, 11 rebounds and a career-high seven assists.  The Rangers turned the ball over only nine times in the game and had 20 2nd chance points to just five for Western State.

The Rangers hit the road for a battle with Colorado Mines on Friday in Golden and a Saturday game with Colorado Christian in Lakewood.
