Gunnison, Colo.: The Regis men's basketball team shot 65 percent in the second half but it wasn't enough as Western State defeated the Rangers 64-56 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
The Rangers (3-6, 1-5 RMAC) hit on just 32 percent from the floor in the first half but trailed just 23-20 at the half. Western State (2-10, 1-6 RMAC) shot 57 percent from the field in the game for their first RMAC victory of the season.
The Rangers trailed by just one late in the first half 21-20, but the Mountaineers used an 11-2 run to take a 32-22 lead with just over 17 minutes remaining in the game.
A layup by senior Curtis Mitchell cut the Mountaineer lead to 55-51 with 3:30 remaining in the second half, however the Rangers wouldn't score again for nearly three minutes and WSC extended their lead to 60-51 with just 42 seconds remaining. Western State led the entire game, sans two ties early in the first half.
Junior Chris Johansen scored a team-high and season-high 20 points to go along with nine rebounds, a game high. Freshman Greg Lee also scored in double figures with 11 points on 5of-7 shooting. Mitchell chipped in with eight points.
regis will travel up the road to Grand Junction where they will take on Mesa State on Monday night at 7:00 p.m.
