Denver, Colo.: Colorado Mines led wire-to-wire and upended the Rangers 62-53 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's basketball action.
Regis (3-9, 1-8 RMAC) got 16 points and 11 rebounds from junior Chris Johansen for his first double-double of the season. The Rangers tied the game at two on a jumper by Johansen but couldn't take the lead the rest of the way.
The Rangers however, were never out of the game as they never trailed by more than 11 points and many times cut it to four and three points but could never get over the hump.
Regis cut it to four with just 2:49 remaining in the game on a jumper by Johansen. Colorado Mines (11-2, 7-2 RMAC) responded with two free throws to extend the lead back to six. That would be as close as the Rangers would get as the Orediggers went 5-for-6 down the stretch from the charity stripe.
The Ranger bench scored 12 points tonight going toe-to-toe with Mines' bench and their 15 points. Regis did lose the battle of the paint as they were outscored 32-14 and were outscored at the free throw line 20-8.
Junior Blake Bales came off the bench to chip in with eight points, as did senior Curtis Mitchell a night after scoring a season-high 30 points.
Regis will have a non-conference tilt on Wednesday as they host Johnson & Wales at 7:00 p.m.
