Box Score The Rangers used their hunger for goals today to fuel themselves to a 5-0 victory over RMAC Conference opponents Adams State College Grizzlies. 182 loyal fans came out to the Regis Match Pitch on this cold Sunday to cheer their Rangers on to a win. The men's high intensity level from the beginning led them to two goals in the first half and three in the second.
"Another good result today, even though we got a little banged up," Head Coach Tony McCall. He continued "I think the freshman we had come in give us a glimpse into the future of the program and I was very happy with how they played."
"We created a lot of opportunities and had 40 shots. We won 5-0, another clean sheet which is always good so we're very happy with how we're moving along."
Ranger forward Martin Maybin scored first in the second minute of play. Midfielder Stephen Reed cleared an Adams State corner kick to the other side of the field. Maybin collected the ball just over the midfield line. He took on two aggressive defenders, beating them both for an unassisted shot at the goal that stayed true.
The Rangers settled in to the game and scored again in the 25th minute. Midfielder Justin Ortinau crossed a corner kick to forward Kyle Emge in the box. Emge finished with a header into the middle of the net.
In the 59th minute, defender Garrett Seitz passed from midfield. Emge faked a touch above the 18 yard box and forward Lio Delpiccolo picked it up, shook his defenders to the right and scored when his shot banked off the right post and into the goal.
The Rangers struck again quickly in the 62nd minute. The ball deflected off the goalie back out to just beyond the six yard box. Emge grasped at the opportunity to score the fourth Ranger goal of the game.
"We stayed at them today," commented forward Michael Sheehan. "It was a really important game for the team to win. We had two losses early on and we're getting back on track now." He expanded on his own intensity level, along with the teams by saying "I was just following suit. It's good for everyone to be aggressive if they want to progress in the conference."
The final goal of the game came with five minutes left on the clock. Defender Jordan Spring passed to defender Andre Gonzalez just outside the six yard box. Gonzalez one-touched to Sheehan who chested the ball down and volleyed it into the upper right of the goal just under the crossbar bringing the Rangers up 5-0.
"I was really happy," Sheehan stated. "The ball laid out to my chest, I took a touch, got a goal, and happily enough it went in."
"Michael Sheehan's goal was fantastic," remarked McCall. "I thought he came in and did a good job as a stop gap center forward. His composure was good, his work rate fantastic, and he scored a great goal."
The Rangers men had 40 shots, 20 of which were on goal, to the Grizzlies seven, five of which were on goal. Goalkeeper Scott Brown started the match and earned three saves on the day. Goalie Ben Sabados finished in goal for the Rangers picking up one save for himself. Defender Joel Mitchell also picked up a team save on the day.
"With the big week coming up, we're just trying to keep moving forward" finished McCall.
The Rangers will travel to Metro State on Wednesday, October 12th at 3:30 PM for an RMAC Conference game.
