Box Score Denver, Colo.: (By Dylan Docker) The Regis University Rangers (2-1) celebrated Black Friday in style with a convincing victory over the Northern New Mexico Eagles (0-15). Regis trailed only briefly in the first half before grabbing a permanent advantage.
The Eagles built a five-point lead in the first five minutes of play, but that would be their largest lead of the night. The Rangers struck back with a 13-2 run in which junior guard Breen Weeks and senior guard Lance Korell each nailed a clutch three-pointer. Conversely, the Eagles hurt their cause by shooting 0-of-8 from three-point range. The Rangers maintained an efficient approach throughout the half to bring a 32-21 lead into the locker room.
Regis continued their offensive attack in the second half with an 11-4 run to build a game-high 16-point lead. The Eagles showed their resiliency with a late run of their own, but the deficit proved to be too much for the visitors. Northern New Mexico was limited to just five free throw attempts and struggled to retain the ball, snagging 15 total rebounds against 23 total rebounds by the Rangers in the half.
Regis notched the victory by hitting 41% (25-61) of attempted field goals, including 36 points scored in the paint. The Rangers also capitalized on mistakes with 17 points off of 18 turnovers committed by the Eagles. Northern New Mexico failed to score on all 11 Regis turnovers.
Junior guard Dionte Goodlett was once again a force for the Regis offense. Goodlett's 13 points led the Rangers and pushed his season point total to 50, giving him the overall team lead so far. Goodlett was also credited with a pair of steals. Sophomore forward Jon Conley and teammate Weeks each picked up 12 points of their own, giving Regis a trio of double-digit scorers.
Junior forward Demitrius Owens supplemented the high-energy offense by effectively securing the ball. He led the team with 11 total rebounds, which contributed to the 16 second-chance points the Rangers scored. Owens further impeded the Eagles with a block and two assists in 33 minutes of play.
The Rangers will host Sioux Falls tomorrow night to conclude non-conference play. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST at the Regis Fieldhouse.
