Regis University Struggles in 72-58 Loss to Chadron State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Chadron, Neb.: (By Dylan Docker) The Regis men dropped their third straight contest Friday night, falling 72-58 on the road to the Chardon State Eagles. The Rangers (3-4, 0-3) again failed to contain the opposing offense as the Eagles (1-6, 1-2) produced four double-digit scorers on the night.

The Eagles made an immediate statement in the first half, scoring the first points and taking a permanent lead. Senior center Moala Tautuaa dropped two slam dunks in the opening minute to give the home team immediate momentum. The Rangers answered with 10 first half points from sophomore forward Jon Conley. Neither team posted a significant run, but the Eagles maintained an efficient offensive attack to bring a 39-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Chadron State got back to work in the second half by taking a double-digit lead in the opening minutes, highlighted by another slam dunk from Tautuaa. The Regis offense remained resilient, frequently finding ways to answer with points to prevent the Eagles from making a run. Senior forward Chris Johansen led the Regis rally with 13 points in the final nine minutes, but the visitors could not overcome the early hole. With the final score of 72-58, Chadron State picked up their first win of the 2011-2012 season.

Johansen led the Rangers with 13 total points. Junior guard Dionte Goodlett posted 12 points of his own and rounded out his performance with a team-leading four assists. Johansen and Goodlett tied for the team lead with three steals apiece.

Junior forward Demitrius Owens put forth a solid effort on both sides of the ball. He scored eight points and led the team with eight total rebounds. Through seven games Owens leads the Rangers with 67 total rebounds on the season.

The Rangers conclude their weekend road trip Sunday, December 11 against the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. MST.
