Regis University Men Drop High-Scoring Affair to New Mexico Highlands 84-75

Box Score

Denver, Colo.: (By Dylan Docker) The Regis men lost consecutive games for the first time this season, falling 84-75 to the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys Saturday night at the Regis Fieldhouse. The Rangers (3-3, 0-2) failed to bounce back from last night's tough loss, allowing the Cowboys (2-3, 1-1) to claim the road victory.

Once again the Rangers struggled to handle the Cowboys athleticism in the first half. Aside from the game's first field goal connection, Regis trailed for the duration of the half once the Highlands offense got to work. The Cowboys maintained a modest lead through the first 10 minutes before launching a 20-9 run to take a double-digit advantage. Neither team connected from three-point range, but the Cowboys were efficient in the paint (30 total points) and off the bench (19 total points) to build a 44-34 lead at the intermission.

The Cowboys carried their momentum into the second half, putting up a 15-6 run for a game-high 17-point lead. From there the Rangers began to chip away, launching an 8-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to seven. However, seven was the smallest margin Highlands would allow as the visiting offense refused to let Regis complete the rally. 11 second half points from junior guard Dionte Goodlett was not enough to lift the Rangers, who ultimately fell by a final score of 84-75.

Regis senior forward Chris Johansen picked up his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Johansen played all 40 minutes and contributed a pair of assists and a steal in addition to his impressive offensive performance.

Junior guard Breen Weeks led the Rangers with another huge game on offense. In 39 minutes of play he scored 23 points, pushing his team-leading season total to 94. Weeks also led the Rangers with two steals and tied teammate Demitrius Owens for the assists lead with three.

The Rangers will leave the Fieldhouse for the first time this season to take on Chadron State College on Friday, December 9 in Chadron, Neb. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. MST.
