Regis Men Fall 62-52 to Visiting Western State College

Box Score

Denver, Colo.: (By Dylan Docker) The Rangers took the court for the first time in 13 days Friday night at the Regis Fieldhouse, but failed to secure a victory against the visiting Mountaineers falling by a score of 62-52 to Western State (4-7, 2-5 RMAC).

The loss dropped the Regis men to 3-7 overall and 0-6 in the RMAC and is their sixth consecutive defeat.

The Rangers stayed close by never allowing the Mountaineers to lead by more than four points through the first twelve minutes. However, the visitors posted an 11-2 run toward the end of the half to build a 10-point lead, their largest of the night.

Despite the efficient Western State offense, Regis refused to let their opponent pull away. Seven points from junior guard Breen Weeks in the final four minutes of the half trimmed the deficit to only five at halftime.

Unfortunately the Rangers could not build momentum in the second half. A three-pointer and two free throws from junior guard Dionte Goodlett put the Western State advantage at just two, but the Mountaineers answered with 18 points in the paint and 18 points off the bench to prevent a sustained Regis rally.

Junior center Charles Joseph picked up a double-double for the Mountaineers en route to the 62-52 win over the home team.

Junior forward Demitrius Owens led the Rangers with 13 total points and three assists. He was 5-10 from the field and connected on his only three-point attempt. Owens also collected six total rebounds, bringing his team-leading season total to 89.

Weeks picked up 10 points in 29 minutes of play. The double-digit scoring game put his season total at 124 points, giving him the team lead. Weeks rounded out his Friday night performance with five total rebounds and a steal.

The Rangers will seek to celebrate New Year's Eve with a win Saturday, December 31 against Colorado Mesa at the Regis Fieldhouse. Tomorrow night's game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., or approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game.
