Denver, Colo.: The Regis Rangers led briefly to begin the game but the out-manned Rangers fell to New Mexico Highlands 79-68 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Regis (6-18, 3-17 RMAC) actually took the lead before the tipoff when senior Curtis Mitchell, who scored 17 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, hit 1-of-2 free throws following a technical foul on New Mexico Highlands for dunking during the pre-game warmups.
It was New Mexico Highlands (18-6, 14-6 RMAC) the rest of the way and started the game on a 21-8 run and never looked back.
Regis cut the lead to 15, 37-22, at the break after finishing the half on a 4-0 run. Then the Rangers started the second half on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 37-29. Regis got as close as seven on a few occassions but everytime the Rangers got close the Cowboys responded and eventually won 79-68.
Regis shot 50 percent in the second half, a far cry from the 26.5 percent they shot in the first half and 37.1 percent for the game. New Mexico Highlands outrebounded the Rangers 43-32.
Mitchell's 20 points led all players with freshman Jon Conley grabbing nine rebounds, six offensive, along with 15 points. Junior Chris Johansen had 11 points and six rebounds, while junior Myron Sanders collected six rebounds off the bench.
Regis will take on Western New Mexico tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
