Rangers Open Series with 7-5 Victory Over Mesa State

Boxscore

Denver, Colo.: The opening game of the Regis-Mesa State RMAC baseball series was a good one coming down to the last at bat with the Rangers prevailing 7-5.

Regis (10-10, 8-5 RMAC) got on the board first in the second inning when junior shortstop Ty Lain drove in junior Alex Haag who was at second following a wild pitch.  Mesa State (11-8, 9-4 RMAC) tied the game in the fifth inning scoring a run on three hits.

Junior right-hander Charlie Henderson stymied Mesa State in the first four innings, giving up no hits and just one base runner.  Mesa State tied the game at one by scoring a run in the fifth off Henderson.

The Rangers responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by a two-run single by freshman Steven Brault to help Regis to the 5-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh the Mavericks put two more on the board to cut the lead to 5-3.  The first score of the inning happened when Ryan Shelton tried to put a sacrifice bunt down and Henderson fielded the ball and looked to throw to first but no one was covering the base.  Second baseman Wes Keelan covered late and there was a collision at first that allowed the runner from second to score.

The Rangers answered back with two runs of their own highlighted by a two-run single by sophomore Bob Terry.

The Mavericks made it interesting in the ninth inning when the first two Maverick batters singled and then a double down the left field line to score a run to close the gap to 7-4.  One batter later, Henderson hit Ken Evanson to load the bases with just one out.  Henderson then gave way to SOPHOMORE Hunter Aronson.  Greg Anderson hit a single to score Quinton Haynes and now a 7-5 lead for Regis.

Aronson and the Regis defense then turned a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.  For Aronson it was his first save of the season and improved Henderson's record to 4-1.

Henderson went 8 1/3 innings allowing five earned runs and striking out five.

Terry went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while leadoff man Brault went 2-for-5 also with two RBIs.  Junior Dave Holland had two hits.

The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
