Denver, Colo.: Regis led for most of the series finale against Mesa State but a ninth inning walk-off single by freshman Jay Rollinson proved to be the game winner.
Mesa State (13-9, 9-5 RMAC) got on the board with a run in the first inning off Regis (11-12, 9-7 RMAC) starter junior Mike McElreath.
The Rangers responded with four runs in the second inning scoring three of the runs with two outs. The first run occurred when the Rangers had bases loaded and sophomore Nano Jacobsen hit a fly ball to right field and junior Ty Lain was getting ready to tag when the right fielder dropped the ball allowing Lain to score. A double by sophomore Wes Keelan and a single by freshman Steven Brault on back-to-back at bats brought in two runs.
Regis held a 5-4 lead after Mesa State scored one run in the sixth inning. Mesa State tied the game in the eighth inning scoring a run to make it 5-5.
Brault, who went 3-for-5 in the game, started off the bottom of the ninth with a single to right field. Sophomore Bob Terry then was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Taylor Hamilton came in out of the Mesa State bullpen to replace Mike Sutton.
Freshman Jon Shoutta came up and hit a ball down the right field line that appeared to be fair and scored Brault from second and sent the Ranger dugout into a frenzy. The Mavericks all thought it was foul and the umpires had a discussion and determined that is was in fact foul and put Shoutta back in the batters box.
On the very next pitch, Shoutta was plunked in the arm and loaded the bases. Rollinson then stepped to the plate and became the hero by hitting a single to right field that plated Brault and the winning run.
Jacobsen led the Rangers with two RBIs, while McElreath went 7 2/3 innings scattering six hits allowing just four earned runs while striking out five.
Senior Bryant Asnicar was credited with the win going 1 1/3 innings allowing just one hit.
Regis will travel cross-town to take on Metro State starting on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
