Denver, Colo.: Highlighted by two homeruns from sophomore Bob Terry, Regis took game one of the four-game weekend series 12-5.
Terry got Regis (12-12, 10-7 RMAC) off to a hot start in the first inning after freshman Steven Brault led the inning off with a single to left field and then Terry stroked his first homerun of the season over left field.
The Rangers scored another run in the second inning when Brault again singled, this time to right field, to drive in junior Dave Holland. Meanwhile, junior ace Charlie Henderson was dealing. He retired the first 11 batters he faced and got his fifth victory of the season again just one loss. He threw his third complete game of the season throwing all nine innings while striking out five Roadrunners.
Metro State (14-8, 10-7 RMAC) responded by scoring two in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Ranger offense got going again in the fifth inning. Senior Zach Blakeley led off the inning with a single to left field and then freshman Jon Shoutta, who had struck out the previous two at bats, deposited the ball over the outfield fence for his team-leading eighth homerun of the season. The Rangers also scored two runs on a ball hit by senior Aaron Salvucci that was booted by Metro State's second baseman David Kaplan.
Regis tacked on four more in the eighth inning to put the game away when they sent nine batters to the plate getting three hits and taking advantage of another Metro State error.
Brault and Terry, the 1 and 2 hitters in the Rangers batting order, were a combined 8-for-11 from the plate. Brault went 4-for-5, while Terry was 4-for-6. Terry along with Shoutta each drove in three runs. Holland and junior Ty Lain each went 2-for-4 with an RBI each.
The two teams will play two more games tomorrow beginning at noon at the Auraria Baseball Field.
