Grand Junction, Colo.: Regis found it tough to find runs against Mesa State starter Jared Christensen in an opening round RMAC Tournament loss 5-2. Regis will now play Friday at 12:00 p.m. against six seed New Mexico Highlands who fell to Nebraska-Kearney.
Mesa State (30-19) scored two in the third and one in the fourth before Regis (22-26) got on the board. With one out, senior Zach Blakeley hit a double to leftfield and then scored the first run of the game when junior Ty Lain singled up the middle. The Rangers had four hits in the inning and had the bases loaded with two outs but couldn't score anymore.
The Mavericks scored two insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Freshman Jon Shoutta hit his RMAC-leading 16th homerun of the season, a solo shot, with two outs in the ninth.
Blakeley went 2-for-4, while Shoutta, Lain, senior Tim Terry, junior Dave Holland, and sophomore Wes Keelan each collected one hit.
Junior Charlie Henderson slipped to 7-4 on the season going seven innings, allowing just three earned runs. Senior Bryant Asnicar threw one inning allowing one hit and striking out one.
