Box Score Lakewood, Colo.: Missed opportunities down the stretch doom the Rangers in a 69-64 loss to Colorado Christian. Junior Demitrius Owen's fourth double-double of the season wasn't enough as the Rangers fall to 4-8 overall and 1-7 in RMAC action.
The first half was hotly contested with neither team leading by more than seven points. The score was tied five times and there were two lead changes. The Ranger bench supplied some offensive spark late in the half as senior Myron Sanders made a layup with just over one minute left to put the lead at 33-26. Following an old-fashioned three-point play by Colorado Christian (2-10, 1-7 RMAC), freshman Dylan King hit a three-pointer with just 39 seconds to play to push the lead back to seven points, 36-29.
The Rangers came out a blazing by going on an 8-1 run to start the second half and lead 44-30 with just over 17 minutes remaining.
CCU then gave the home team something to cheer about scoring 12 unanswered points, trailing just 44-42 with 12:24 remining in the game. The Rangers just hit a dry spell over those five minutes by missing eight straight shots. The lid was lifted off the basket when senior Chris Johansen hit a layup in the lane to stretch the lead back to four points.
The sixth tie of the game came with 10:20 remaining and then it was a fight to the finish. Owens tied the game for the eighth and final time with 4:21 remaining on a layup and then gave the Rangers the lead with a free throw for a three-point play.
CCU scored two straight baskets but RU wouldn't go away. The two teams traded baskets over the next three minutes with Regis only getting within one. Junior Breen Weeks hit one of his three long bombs with 1:56 remaining to cut the lead to 62-61. Weeks hit another three with just six seconds remaining to trim the lead to one point, but CCU's Daniel Pilkington who was 18-for-21 at the free throw line went 6-for-6 down the stretch to seal the victory for the Cougars.
Owens had a team-high 21 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds. Weeks scored 10 and sophomore Jon Conley supplied nine points. Regis had a decided advantage on the boards with a 42-29 advantage but were outscored at the free throw line 28-12.
Regis will now head to Golden to take on 12th ranked Colorado Mines on Saturday night.
