18th-Ranked Regis Wins Five-Set Thriller at #24 Adams State

Box Score

Alamosa, Colo.: The "Thrilla in Manilla" pitted two heavyweights in the boxing ring in 1975 and tonight almost 500 people witessed a "thirlla in Alamosa" as the 18th-ranked Rangers went on the road to take on #24 Adams State at Plachy Hall.

Two of the heavyweights of RMAC in 2012 battled each other for five sets before Regis prevailed in the first of three road games in three days for Regis (13-6, 7-2 RMAC).  With the win, the Rangers moved to within one game of RMAC leading Colorado Mines.

In set one, the Rangers held a slim 10-9 lead before errors by Adams State (13-4, 6-3 RMAC) gave the Rangers a 19-10 lead and the Rangers never looked back and took set one 25-15.  The Grizzlies wouldn't let the Rangers get away with the match so easily.  The second set was tied six times and had seven lead changes.  Regis led 22-21 after senior Caitlin McDonnell put down a kill.  Adams State took a timeout and got a point off a service error by senior Makayla Higgins.  McDonnell came back with another kill, to give Regis the 23-22 lead.  Unfortunately, that would be the last point Regis would get and fall in set two 25-23.

The Grizzlies took set three easily by a score of 25-17 but the resilient Rangers would not go quietly.  Set four had 11 ties and three lead changes with the last one coming at 14.  Regis then scored five in a row which included two kills by freshman Caitie Breaux.  Freshman Katie Klein had two kills down the stretch, while junior Lauren Flanagan chipped in one as Regis forced a set five with the 25-22 win.

Set five did not start out well for Regis as Adams State, behind the arms of Deprece Washington and Domingue Davis, jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the race to 15.  Regis battled back and got kills from Klein and Higgins to crawl back into the game at six.  Adams State led 8-6 and 9-7 before Regis reeled off six straight points, aided by five Grizzly errors.  Klein ended the match with a kill, her 18th of the night, to take set five 15-11.

Klein led all players in kills and just had four errors in 35 attempts for a .400 attack percentage.  Breaux had 12 kills, while sophomore Gina Morgan chipped in with seven.  Flanagan chipped in with six kills and three blocks, while Morgan led the way for Regis defensively at the net with five blocks.

Freshman Jaclyn Williamson again quarterbacked the team with 40 assists and a career-high three service aces.  She also ranked third on the team with seven digs which was led by Higgins' 14 digs followed closely by junior Sage Martinson's 13.

Regis heads north from Alamosa to take on CSU-Pueblo on Friday night.
