Epic Ranger Comeback Pushes Them into RMAC Championship

Box Score

Golden, Colo.: Down two sets to none, the 14th-ranked Rangers' epic comeback over Adams State propelled them into the RMAC Volleyball Championship game against Colorado Mines on Saturday night.

Regis (24-8) came out flat in the first two sets allowing the athletic Adams State (24-5) team to take both by scores of and 25-19 and 25-22.  The Rangers made comebacks late in those sets to make them as close as they were.

Just when it looked like the Rangers would be swept out of the gym the "cardiac kids" started their run.  Trailing 21-17, sophomore Gina Morgan and freshman Jaclyn Williamson each collected a kill to put Regis down just 21-19.  A block by All-RMAC First Teamer Caitie Breaux pulled the Rangers within one.  Morgan put down another kill tied the score at 21.  Morgan and Breaux put down back-to-back kills to put Regis ahead to stay 23-22 with the final point coming from a block by Williamson and junior Lauren Flanagan, who had a career-high nine blocks.

The Rangers had a 19-13 lead but just when it looked like it would be an easy set, the Grizzlies didn't agree.  ASU went on a 9-3 run to tie the set at 22.  Following a timeout by Regis Head Coach Frank Lavrisah, Flanagan teamed up with freshman Katie Klein to get another block.  The score was tied at 23 and again 24.  Morgan, who had 12 kills and just one error, put down another kill and then Morgan and senior Makayla Higgins blocked the Rangers to a 26-24 win, forcing a fifth and deciding set.

Regis jumped out to a 7-3 lead in set five and led 8-4 at the switch.  Adams State again battled back to put the score at 9-8 following a ball handling error.  The fortunate thing was the Rangers did not relinquish their lead but led just 12-11 before scoring three of the last four points with kills from Klein, Higgins and Breaux to advance to the championship game.

Adams State, who lost to the Rangers in the 2008 RMAC Championship game, out-hit the Rangers .193 to .183 with Regis getting 14 total blocks to 12 for the Grizzlies.

Klein tied for the game-high with 21 kills including six digs and three blocks.  Breaux put down 14 kills and was part of four blocks.  Higgins had a great game in the back row with 21 digs and was also a part of four blocks.

Williamson dished out 49 assists, while also digging out 10 balls.  She was part of three blocks, while getting a career-high five kills.  Junior Sage Martinson had 17 digs and had a game-high four service aces.   Sophomore Maya Kirkeby chipped in with 10 digs as well.

The Rangers will take on Colorado Mines for the third time this season on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Colorado Mines.  The Orediggers have won the previous two meetings this season including a 3-0 win two weeks ago.  By all indications, the winner of this matchup will be the #1 seed in the NCAA South Central Region and host the eight-team tournament in two weeks.
