Box Score Las Vegas, Nev.: The Ranger women's softball team took on the second day of the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. Saturday. Throughout the day, the women collected a pair of losses, a 4-3 extra-innings showdown with Minnesota-Duluth and a 9-0 loss to former tournament champions Augustana College (S.D.).
The Rangers struck first, scoring one run in the first inning after freshman Taylor Wilcox got on base with a single and was sent around the bases to be sent home off a single by freshman Molly Tyler.
The women scored two more in the next inning that was answered by one of Duluth's own runs. Duluth put two up in the sixth to tie up the score. The two teams would remain tied, until Duluth finished the game in the eighth off an unearned run.
Senior Cassie Long and junior Shannon Massine grabbed up 2-for-3 performances. Long reached base with two singles and a fielder's choice throughout the first game, while Massine picked up a pair of singles for herself.
Freshman right-hander Molly Tyler started on the mound, collecting three innings. In 12 batters faced, Tyler struck out one and walked four before senior right-hander Nikki Haberkorn took the mound. Haberkorn will get the loss for the women after pitching 4.3 innings and facing 26 batters. She struck out four, walked four, and allowed six hits and four runs before the end of the game.
At 4:30 PM, the women took the field to play former tournament champions Augustana College (S.D.). The Vikings put up four runs in the first and five runs in the third to make it a short game for the Rangers.
Rachel Illias, Breanna Backlund, Natalie Adami, Taylor Wilcox and Molly Tyler each collected one hit during the game. Backlund sent a triple out in the first inning and Adami doubled in the third.
Freshman Sydney Gaffin will get the loss after facing 20 batters in three innings. She allowed nine hits and two walks while striking out one. Molly Tyler saw time on the mound as well for one inning. In four batters, she struck out one and walked one.
The Rangers will take on Lewis University of Romeoville, Illinois on Sunday, February 12th at 11:30 AM to close out the Desert Stinger.
