Rangers Take 86-68 Loss on the Road to Cowboys

Box Score

Las Vegas, N.M.: (By Dylan Docker) The Regis men fell in their first of three remaining road games Friday night to the Cowboys of New Mexico Highlands University. The Rangers (5-19, 2-18 RMAC) held a lead through much of the first half, but the Cowboys (11-13, 9-11 RMAC) rode a second half rally for the 86-68 win.

The Cowboys maintained a modest lead through the first six minutes of play, but a long three-pointer from junior guard Breen Weeks tied the score at 10. New Mexico Highlands retook the lead, but Weeks again provided the equalizer with a lay-up only minutes later.

The home team led 21-20 before a field goal connection from sophomore forward Jon Conley gave the Rangers their first lead of the night with 5:41 remaining in the half.

Neither team could solve the other as the lead continued to change. At the end of the first 20 minutes the Cowboys were winning the shootout, giving them a 31-30 lead at halftime.

Both teams picked up where they left off in the second half. The Rangers and Cowboys continued to exchange buckets, leading to a 44-42 advantage for the home team with 13:51 to play.

From there, however, the Cowboys took permanent control. The Rangers were outscored 18-8 over a five-minute span to put them in a 62-50 hole. Despite contributions from multiple Regis shooters, the visiting team could not close the double-digit gap.

New Mexico Highlands went on to win by a final score of 86-68.

Junior guard Dionte Goodlett led the Rangers both from the field and on the boards Friday night. He picked up 15 points and seven total rebounds in 29 minutes of play.

Teammates Weeks and senior guard Chris Johansen tied Goodlett for team leads. Weeks picked up 15 points of his own, while Johansen also collected seven total rebounds. Johansen rounded out his effective evening with 11 points in 31 minutes of play.

The Rangers will board the bus and head to Western New Mexico University for a Saturday night matchup with the Mustangs. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night.
