Box Score 2 Denver, Colo.: (By Dylan Docker) The Rangers traveled to Metro State College to take on the Roadrunners in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday. Regis (4-2) showed that they weren't fazed by their fifth and sixth consecutive road games as they defeated Metro State College (3-3) in both contests.
Game One – Regis 7, Metro State 5
Senior right-hander Charlie Henderson got the start for Regis in game one, while junior southpaw Justin Arceneaux took the hill for Metro State.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when the Roadrunners loaded the bases with only one away. The home team pushed a run across on an RBI fielder's choice, but Henderson retired the next hitter to limit the damage.
After Arceneaux retired the first two Ranger hitters in the fourth, sophomore designated hitter Jon Shoutta cracked a solo home run to tie the game at one apiece. The Rangers later tacked on two more runs to bring a 3-1 lead into the late innings.
The Roadrunners got after Henderson in the seventh, who was lifted after allowing four runs (two earned) and striking out six in 6 1/3 innings. Junior righty Hunter Aronson came on in relief but could not preserve the Regis lead. A pair of Rangers errors resulted in four Metro State runs, giving the home team a 5-3 advantage.
Freshman Mike Thill relieved Arceneaux after seven innings, four strikeouts, and three earned runs allowed. Thill retired the first two hitters in the top of the eighth, but back-to-back walks followed by a pair of wild pitches gave pinch hitter sophomore John Tosches the chance to be a spark.
Tosches answered with a clutch double to score two runs and tie the game at five. Freshman Logan Knox came in to run for Tosches, advanced to third on Thill's third wild pitch of the inning, and scored on a single by junior right fielder Ryan Eustice. He then stole second and scored on a base hit from junior center fielder Bob Terry.
The two-out rally gave the Rangers a 7-5 lead. Sophomore Steven Brault moved from first base to the mound in the ninth inning and induced three groundball outs to secure the win for Regis.
Aronson (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Rangers. Thill (1-1) was charged with the loss for Metro State after his rough outing. Brault (1) was credited with a save for Regis.
Eustice went 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in game one. Shoutta reached base in four of his five of his plate appearances with his fourth-inning homer and three walks.
Game Two – Regis 4, Metro State 0
Senior right-hander Mike McElreath took the ball for Regis in the nightcap. He opposed Metro State sophomore righty Patrick Gojan.
The Rangers struck first in the second inning. A pair of defensive errors put Alex Haag and Tony Piazza into scoring position for Eustice, who poked a double into left field to pick up two RBI's and give Regis the lead.
Eustice did more damage in his next at bat. A single up the middle brought home another pair of Regis runs, pushing the visitor's lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners offense had no answer for McElreath. The Regis starter racked up six strikeouts and allowed only four hits in his seven innings of work. McElreath's dominance and pair of double plays from the Regis defense prevented Metro State base runners from reaching third base in the game.
The early offense was all Regis would need in claiming the 4-0 win and a sweep in the Sunday doubleheader. With the complete-game shutout McElreath (2-0) earned his second win in as many starts for the Rangers. Gojan (0-2) took the loss for Metro State after allowing four runs (two earned) in seven innings pitched.
Eustice powered the Regis offense in game two, going 2-for-3 to drive in all four runs for the visitors.
The Rangers kick off RMAC play with a four-game weekend series at home. Regis will take on New Mexico Highlands University on Friday, March 2 with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
