Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo.: The Ranger women's softball program recorded two losses Sunday (2-11, 7-10) against the ThunderWolves of CSU-Pueblo.
The women scored in the first inning of the first game after junior Shannon Massine singled to right field and advanced to second on a pass ball. She moved to third on a fly out to center field by sophomore Breanna Backlund and scored when senior Cassie Long reached on an error by the shortstop.
The Rangers fell behind in the third inning when the ThunderWolves picked up three runs.
The Rangers scored one run in the fifth after Backlund tripled down the right field line. Freshman Taylor Wilcox picked up an RBI when she singled to left field and scored Backlund. The ThunderWolves piced up one run in the fifth and seven in the sixth to close out the game. The Rangers would not score another run.
Junior Alyssa Beskid went 2-for-2 with two singles and Wilcox went 1-3 with one RBI. Four other Rangers had one hit in the game including Backlund with the triple and Long with a double.
Senior Nikki Haberkorn (2-10) recorded the loss after slinging five innings. She allowed nine hits and eight runs while walking two and striking out three. Freshman Sydney Gaffin saw four batters in the circle, striking out one while allowing three hits and three runs.
The Rangers were off to a good start in the second game of the double header after putting up three runs in the first inning to the ThunderWolves two runs.
Freshman Rachel Illias singled up the middle to start the game. She stole second and advanced to third on a groundout by Massine. Illias scored on a single to left field by Backlund. Long kept the momentum up with a double down the left field line, moving Backlund to third. Beskid singled to left field to score Backlund and move Long to third. Senior Natalie Adami singled through the right side to score Long.
The Rangers scored one run in the second and third innings to keep things going. Illias started off the second with a bunt single. She stole second and moved to third after Massine singled to the shortstop. Massine advanced on the throw and Illias stole home.
Beskid kicked off the third with a double to left field. She advanced on a groundout by Adami and scored on a single up the middle by Wilcox.
The ThunderWolves would put up three runs in the third and two in the fifth to bring the score to 5-7 ThunderWolves going into the sixth inning. Wilcox doubled to left to start off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Haberkorn. Sophomore Keala Bertulfo doubled to right center to score Wilcox and Illias would put down a bunt single to move Bertulfo to third. Massine then reached on an error by second base to score Bertulfo.
The ThunderWolves picked up three runs in the bottom of the sixth and shut down the Rangers in the seventh to clinch the win.
Rachel Illias went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and Alyssa Beskid went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Three other Rangers had two hits in the game and three more women had one hit apiece. Beskid, Long, Wilcox, and Bertulfo all had doubles.
Freshman Molly Tyler (0-3) received the loss after pitching 2.1 innings. She allowed seven hits, five runs, and three walks. Gaffin also saw 3.2 innings on the mound, striking out two and allowing three walks, five runs and six hits.
The Rangers will play New Mexico Highlands at home on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th. Saturday's doubleheader will be at 12:00 and 2:00 PM and Sunday's games will begin at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
