Box Score Grand Junction, Colo.: (By Dylan Docker) Regis and Colorado Mesa continued their four-game series with a Saturday doubleheader in Grand Junction. The Mavericks (18-7, 12-3 RMAC) took care of business on their home field, defeating the Rangers (10-13, 5-9 RMAC) in both games.
Game One – Regis 0, Colorado Mesa 1
Right-handed senior Mike McElreath started game one for the Rangers. He was opposed by Colorado Mesa southpaw Jared Christensen.
Both starters were suburb on Saturday as neither team could crack the scoreboard through seven innings. At one point McElreath retired 12 consecutive batters, while Christensen set down 13 in a row through the early innings.
The game remained scoreless until the eighth and final inning when Colorado Mesa junior Mitch Corwin sent an RBI single into left center field, securing the walk-off victory for the Mavericks.
Colorado Mesa got the win with one run on six hits and no errors. Regis failed to score on five hits and no defensive miscues. Christensen (6-1) was credited with the win for his complete-game effort. McElreath (3-2) took the hard-luck loss for Regis after pitching 7 1/3 innings, allowing one run, and striking out seven Maverick hitters.
Senior Dave Holland, who has settled in as the Rangers' everyday third baseman, collected two of the Rangers five hits. Sophomore first baseman Jon Shoutta also picked up a pair of hits.
Game Two – Regis 4, Colorado Mesa 13
Regis turned to senior left-hander Steve Falconi in the nightcap. Colorado Mesa countered with right-handed senior Dylan Evans.
The Mavericks got after Falconi in the first inning with four runs on three hits. Colorado Mesa maintained a 4-0 lead until the Rangers got to work in the top of the fourth.
Regis opened the inning with three consecutive singles, including an RBI single from sophomore designated hitter John Tosches. Holland and senior left fielder Alex Haag each collected RBI singles of their own before forcing the Mavericks to make a pitching change.
Right-hander Dakota Behr entered the game to face junior catcher Nano Jacobsen, who sent a perfect bunt up the first base line to score Haag and tie the game at four apiece.
After Behr retired his next hitter to end the Rangers threat in the fourth, the Mavericks answered quickly in the home half. The home team retook the lead on a lead-off solo home run from senior center fielder Bobby Cozine. The Mavericks would score another pair in the inning to open up a 7-4 advantage.
The Colorado Mesa offense posted another six runs in the sixth inning, while the bullpen prevented the Rangers from drawing close.
The Mavericks claimed the seven-inning nightcap with 13 runs on 15 hits and no errors. The Rangers scored their four runs on seven hits and no errors. Behr (2-0), who relieved Evans after 3 1/3 innings, picked up the win for Colorado Mesa. Falconi (1-3) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Holland reached in all three of his plate appearances, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
The Rangers conclude their weekend set against the Mavericks on Sunday, March 25. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
