Rangers Open Series in Walk-Off Fashion, Beat Roadrunners 9-8

Box Score

Denver, Colo.: (By Dylan Docker) Regis baseball returned home for the first time in three weeks to take on Metro State College, and the Rangers (11-14, 6-11 RMAC) made sure the 170 fans in attendance on Friday did not leave disappointed.

With the score tied at eight in the bottom of the 12th inning, junior center fielder Bob Terry delivered a walk-off RBI single to beat the Roadrunners (8-15, 5-12 RMAC) by a final score of 9-8.

Right-handed senior Charlie Henderson got the start for Regis. He opposed Metro State southpaw Justin Arceneaux.

The Roadrunners scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead, but the Rangers offense would not wait long to respond. Regis opened the third inning with four straight singles, including a run-scoring bunt from sophomore right fielder Steven Brault and an RBI knock from sophomore designated hitter Tony Piazza.

Senior third baseman Dave Holland gave the Rangers their first lead of the afternoon with a sacrifice fly later in the inning. Jon Shoutta expanded the Regis advantage in the fifth when the sophomore first baseman sent a double down the left field line to score another pair.

Metro State scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at five. The rally included back-to-back solo home runs from Darryl Baca and Gavin Purvis. Having yielded the equalizing runs, Henderson exited the game after 5 2/3 innings and five runs (four earned) allowed.

The Rangers would take a 6-5 lead with an unearned run in the sixth, but the Roadrunners went up 7-6 with a pair of runs in the eighth.

Holland drew a bases-loaded walk and junior catcher Nano Jacobsen collected a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to again give the Rangers a one-run lead.

Junior right-hander Hunter Aronson recorded the final out of the Metro State eighth and returned in the ninth seeking a win out of the bullpen. However, the Roadrunners scored the tying run and kept the Rangers off the board in the home half to force extra innings.

Aronson settled in to prevent Metro State from scoring through the 11th inning. Right-handed junior Aaron Harms came on to pitch a scoreless 12th inning, rounding out a solid overall performance by the Regis bullpen and setting up Terry's at-bat in the bottom half.

After Holland and Jacobsen drew back-to-back walks, Terry sent the decisive base hit into left field. The Rangers won the back-and-forth afternoon tilt by a final score of 9-8.

Regis won with nine runs on 17 hits and four errors. Metro State took the loss with eight runs on 15 hits and three errors. Harms (1-1) was credited with the win in relief, while Ty Jacobs (1-2) was charged with the loss after entering the game to face Terry and giving up the walk-off hit.

Senior Alex Haag came off the bench and reached in all four of his plate appearances. The left fielder went 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, and three runs scored.

Holland finished 1-for-3 with three walks and a pair of RBI's. Junior second baseman Nick Billinger reached base in five of his six plate appearances, collecting four hits and a walk with a run scored.

The Rangers will continue their four-game home series against the Roadrunners with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Game two is scheduled to begin at approximately 3:00 p.m.
