Box Score 2 DENVER, Colo.: The Rangers dropped two conference games to the Grizzlies of Adams State College in Denver, Colo. Saturday afternoon, losing the first in five (0-10) and the second in seven (5-6).
Game one went to the Grizzlies early as they scored three runs in the first and six in the second to put themselves 9-0 up on the Rangers. ASC would put one more run up in the fourth to put the score at 10-0.
Rangers Shannon Massine and Rachel Illias collected the women's only hits in five innings, both in the first inning. Regis did not see another hit.
Senior right-hander Nikki Haberkorn (5-11) collected the loss for the Rangers, while freshman Sydney Gaffin fanned four batters, while allowing four hits and one walk in her three innings in the circle.
Grizzlies' Kelsey Sellars (4-4) allowed two hits and one walk in her five innings. Sellars also struck out five.
The second game started with Grizzlies Rebecca Lindquist sending a three-run homer over the left field fence.
Sophomore Breanna Backlund reached on a fielder's choice play and advanced to second on a wild pitch in the second inning. Haberkorn singled to left center to collect the Rangers first RBI of the day.
Junior Massine singled to the short stop to reach base in the third. She moved over to second on a fielder's choice hit by senior Cassie Long. Freshman Taylor Wilcox singled to left center to score Massine and bring the score to 3-2, Grizzlies.
Adams State put up two more runs in the fourth inning and one in the seven to set the score at 5-2 and put the Rangers at the plate.
With one out in the seventh, freshman Illias singled up the middle to reach base with her second hit of the game. She advanced on a single down the left field line by Massine for the left fielder's second hit of the game as well. Wilcox collected an RBI by singling through the right side and Backlund sent a big hit to left field for two RBIs of her own.
"We were feeding off each other's energy at the end of the game," commented Illias. "We just need to put everything together, come out and be aggressive."
The Rangers were not able to even the score and send the game into extra innings, however.
Freshman Molly Tyler (2-4) earned the loss after tossing 3.2 innings. She allowed three hits, five runs, and two walks while striking out two. Gaffin spent 3.1 innings in the circle allwing three hits, one run and one walk during her time.
The Rangers face the Grizzlies at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM Sunday at the Regis Softball Field to finish the RMAC conference series.
