Ranger Softball Drops Two Friday; Bows out of RMAC Tournament

DENVER, Colo.:  Regis softball took their first loss of the RMAC conference tournament early in the morning, Friday to the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College 4-6.  The Rangers fell 13-3 to Colorado Christian University in Golden, Colo., sending them out of the tournament.

The Rangers went down 4-0 before they scored their first two runs in the fourth inning.  The Ranger half of the fourth started with a single through the left side by junior Shannon Massine

She advanced to second as sophomore Breanna Backlund reached first on an error by the pitcher and to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Taylor Wilcox.  Massine scored on a passed ball and Backlund scored on a long double to the fence by senior Natalie Adami.

Regis came up in the fifth inning ready to score more and even the score, starting the inning with a double to right center by sophomore Shelby Wieman

Freshman Beth Petersen pinch ran for Wieman and was advanced to home on freshman Brianna Bogdajeiwcz's bunt single to the pitcher that was thrown away, putting the Steamwood, Ill. native on third base.

The Rangers picked up an RBI by the bat of Massine after a single to left field.

Massine went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored at the plate.  Adami went 1-for-3 during the game, while picking up an RBI herself.  Bogdajeiwcz finished the game with a 2-for-3 performance with one run scored.

Freshman Sydney Gaffin and Molly Tyler split time in the circle, Gaffin seeing the first two innings and 13 batters.  She allowed four runs and seven hits.  Tyler finished the rest of the game on the mound, allowing five hits and two runs, while striking out one.

This loss sent the women over to Colorado School of Mines to take on the #4 seed Colorado Christian University at 1:00 PM.

The Cougars scored two runs early in the second inning, eight in the fourth and three more run in the fifth to close out the Rangers 13-3 by the end of the fifth.

Massine went 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI in the third.  Seniors Maegan Cooley, Cassie Long and Natalie Adami, as well as sophomore Breanna Backlund, each had one hit during the game.

Gaffin (10-10) received the loss after striking out two and allowing eight runs on nine hits.  Tyler also saw time, pitching to 13 batters and giving up five runs on eight hits.

The women complete the 2011-12 season with a 22-27 overall record and a 20-16 RMAC conference record.
