Box Score 2 Lakewood, Colo.: (By Dylan Docker) Regis baseball traveled to Colorado Christian University for a Friday doubleheader at All-Star Park. The Rangers (23-20, 18-16 RMAC) opened their final weekend series of 2012 the right way, continuing their streak of high offensive production to take down the Cougars (9-35, 6-28 RMAC) in both games.
Game One – Regis 19, Colorado Christian 7
Senior right-hander Charlie Henderson got the start for Regis is game one. He opposed Colorado Christian junior Travis Mosler.
Sophomore first baseman Tony Piazza put the Rangers on the board with his third home run of the year, a two-run shot over the left-center field wall.
Steven Brault highlighted a seven-run second inning with his third home run of the season. The three-run shot by the sophomore right fielder put the Rangers on top 9-1 in the early innings.
The Rangers continued to pile on runs in the late innings. Sophomore designated hitter Jon Shoutta connected for a solo shot in the sixth, extending his team-leading home run total to eight on the season.
Regis scored in every inning but the fourth to complete the game-one rout. The Rangers won with 19 runs on 20 hits and one error. The Cougars fell with seven runs on 14 hits and three errors. Henderson (5-3) picked up the win after allowing seven runs (four earned) and striking out four in seven innings. Mosler (1-8) took the loss for 5 1/3 innings of work during which he allowed 14 runs (13 earned).
Brault finished 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles and his second-inning homer. He picked up four RBI's and scored three runs in that span.
Piazza also finished with four RBI's on two hits in four at-bats. Shoutta collected four hits and scored a pair of runs in six plate appearances.
Game Two – Regis 8, Colorado Christian 4
Right-handed senior Mike McElreath took the ball for the Rangers in the nightcap. Junior Marshall Crawford looked to get the Cougars back on track.
Shoutta and Brault each picked up RBI hits in the first inning to again put the Rangers ahead early.
Senior third baseman Dave Holland hit his first home run of the year in the second inning. Holland's first long ball of the season put the Rangers on top 3-0. Shoutta and Brault struck again later in the inning, giving Regis a comfortable lead.
Shoutta brought home another pair of runs with a two-out single ahead of an RBI double by Brault, giving the Rangers a six-run advantage after two innings.
The Cougars scratched out a run in the fifth inning, but the home team struggled to string together hits against McElreath. The Rangers remained quiet on offense until the seventh and final inning when senior left fielder Alex Haag scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore designated hitter John Tosches then brought home the seventh Rangers run with an RBI single.
Colorado Christian rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Regis would hold on for the twin-bill sweep. The Rangers claimed the nightcap victory with eight runs on 14 hits and no errors. The Cougars scored four runs on nine hits and one error. McElreath (6-4) pitched all seven innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out five. Crawford (0-1) was charged with the loss for allowing eight runs (five earned) in 6 1/3 innings of work.
Shoutta went 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBI's, and a run scored. Brault picked up two RBI's on two hits in four at-bats.
The Rangers and Cougars will wrap up the series tomorrow, April 28 with another doubleheader at All-Star Park. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Game two will begin at approximately 3:00 p.m.
