Rangers Keep on Winning; McElreath Picks up Eighth Win of the Season

Box Score

Pueblo, Colo.: The Regis University baseball team keeps winning and are the only undefeated team left at the 2012 RMAC Baseball Tournament following a 4-2 win over New Mexico Highlands.

Regis (30-21) has now won five in a row and 10 of the last 11 games and will look to advance as they await the winner of New Mexico Highlands and Colorado Mesa.

Senior Mike McElreath took the mound and allowed one run in the first inning on one hit and a walk.  He then set down five in a row before New Mexico Highlands (38-13) threatened again in the third.  The leadoff hitter singled and on a steal attempt got gunned down by Ranger backstop Nano Jacobsen.  The next batter singled but McElreath was able to strand him at third and get out of the inning unscathed.

The Rangers tied the game in the second inning after Bob Terry walked and then stole second and with two outs Dave Holland singled up the middle to plate Terry.  In the fourth inning the Rangers scored one run.  Highlands pitcher Matt Gualco walked Holland with two outs and then Cody Hastings moved him over to third with a single to rightfield and was able to score when Cowboy's rightfielder AJ Alexander air-mailed the throw to third base allowing Holland to trot home.

Again with two outs, the Rangers were able to push a run across in the seventh inning when senior Alex Haag doubled to left center to score Nick Billinger who got on with a single of his own.

The Cowboys wouldn't go away and in the eighth put runners at first and second with no outs.  Alexander then hit a ball to Hastings at short who flipped to Billinger at second and then threw to Tony Piazza at first for the double play.  Jordan Falcon was moved over to third base on the play.  Josh McMahon then drove in Falcon to put NMHU down just 4-3, but not for the double play the game would have been tied.  Especially considering that Luis Saenz, the next batter, singled and then was caught stealing after McElreath's pitch went in the dirt and Saenz tried to advance to second but was thrown out by Jacobsen.

Regis tacked on an insurance run in the eighth following a leadoff single by Steven Brault.  He was sacrificed over by Bob Terry which was followed by two straight walks to load the bases.  Hastings hit a grounder to third which allowed Brault to score the Rangers fourth run of the game.

Ranger reliever Hunter Aronson came in and got Kyle Davis to lineout to shortstop Cody Hastings.  However, it was not just a routine lineout as Hastings had to time it just right and lept into the air to snag it out of the night air.  Aronson struck out the next hitter and got the final out on a grounder to third.

McElreath scattered seven hits and struckout six improving to 8-4 on the season.  Aronson came in to earn his seventh save of the season.

Eustice, Billinger, Haag, Piazza, Brault, Holland, and Hastings each had one of the seven hits with Haag, Hastings and Holland each driving in a run.

Regis will now move on and play under the lights again against the winner of New Mexico Highlands and Colorado Mesa at 7:00 p.m.
