Box Score Denver, Colo.: Two Ranger volleyball players did something tonight that hasn't happened in nearly five years. Freshmen Katie Klein and Caitie Breaux both had over 20 kills tonight against Chadron State, the first time a Regis duo has done that since October 2007.
Klein put down 22, including nine in the first set, while Breaux contributed 20. The last time that happened was October 30, 2007 when Meghan Meehan had 30 kills and Liz Franz put down 26.
Regis (7-4, 2-0 RMAC) couldn't shake Chadron State (2-8, 0-2 RMAC) in the first set with neither team leading by more than three points. The score was tied at 20, 22, 24, and 25 before two straight kills by Klein gave the Rangers the 27-25 victory.
Set two was much of the same with the score close most of the way, but late in the set, Regis led 21-17 but the resilient group from Chadron battled back to tie the score at 22. The Rangers scored two in a row before the Eagles came back to tie the game at 24 and again at 25. A kill by Klein and a service ace by junior Sage Martinson to put the Rangers up 2-0 with the 27-25 win.
CSC came out of the lockerroom in a roll and led 21-13 before the Rangers found their groove. Regis scored four in a row to cut the lead in half. Following an Eagle timeout, Breaux put down a kill to cut the lead to 21-18. The two teams went back and forth before Regis scored three in a row to tie the set at 24. Following another Chadron timeout, they got back-to-back kills to put away set three 26-24.
Set four was close again but Regis used their depth to outscore the visitors down the stretch 5-1 to win 25-18 and improve to 2-0 in the early RMAC season.
Breaux had just one error in 41 attempts for a .463 attack percentage. She also had two service aces, six digs and two blocks for a solid all-around performance. Klein hit .353 to give the Rangers a .271 attack percentage for the match. She also had six digs and two blocks.
Senior Caitlin McDonnell put down 12 kills with just one error in 26 attempts (.423). Freshman Jaclyn Williamson had 53 set assists, notching a double-double with 13 digs. Martinson led all players with 21 digs and also had two service aces, while sophomore Maya Kirkeby dug out 11 attacks.
Regis steps out of conference action when they host South Dakota Mines on Tuesday, September 18 at 5:00 p.m.
