Box Score 2 Las Vegas, N.M.: The 24th-ranked Regis University volleyball team forced New Mexico Highlands into 23 errors en route to their 10th win of the season. Regis, now 6-1 in the RMAC, won by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 28-26 to beat the Cowgirls for the 31st time in 32 total games against the two teams.
New Mexico Highlands (7-9, 1-6 RMAC) led the first set at 20-18 when Regis Head Coach Frank Lavrisha called a timeout. The Rangers (10-6, 6-1 RMAC) responded by scoring seven straight points with a kill by Gina Morgan and a service ace by Sage Martinson. The other five points came from service errors or attack errors by the Cowgirls.
Regis held a slim 18-17 lead but that is when Regis buckled down and scored seven of the next nine points to win set two 25-19.
The largest lead in set three by either team was when Regis led 18-15. N.M. Highlands took a timeout and score the next three to tie the set at 18. From there it went back and forth and eventually went to extra points. A kill by Katie Klein put Regis up 25-24 but the Cowgirls got a kill from Jazmine Harge to tie the set at 25.
Alicia Moreno of NMHU put the home team up 26-25 but another attack error tied the set at 26. Sophomore Caitie Breaux then took over by hitting home two of her 10 kills to give the Rangers the 28-26 win.
Klein led Regis with 13 kills in just 21 attempts with two errors for a .524 attack percentage, which also led the team. After Breaux's 10 kills came Gima Morgan's eight kills and no errors. Martinson provided six kills, while Diamond Ridley-Pierce had five kills.
Maya Kirkeby led all players with 16 digs, while Martinson had 14 and Klein recorded a double-double with 10 digs. Rebecca Sponcil stepped in at setter to assist on 26 kills, while digging out six balls. Ridley-Pierce and Breaux were each a part of three blocks.
Regis heads south to Silver City, N.M. to take on Western New Mexico on Friday night.
