Rangers Have Tough Time with Adams State in Five-Set Loss

Box Score

Denver, Colo.: The Regis University volleyball team had plenty of chances to put away Adams State on Thursday night, but let the visitors stay in the match and eventually took the match in five sets.

Regis (10-8, 6-3 RMAC) led in set one 24-20 but just when it looked like the Rangers would take set one, Adams State (8-9, 6-3 RMAC) scored the next three points to cut the deficit to 24-23.  Regis got Letisha Spencer to hit into an attack error to win set one 25-23.

Set two was just as close and was tied at 20 before the Grizzlies, who went to their first NCAA Tournament last year, reeled off four straight points and eventually won 25-22.

Following a kill by Lauren Flanagan, Regis led set three 20-12 and that is when the wheels fell off the Ranger bus.  ASU scored five in a row to cut the lead to 20-17 and eventually tied it up at 23 following an attack error by Gina Morgan.  The Grizzlies finished out the next two points to stun the Rangers after scoring 13 of the last 16 points.

The Rangers came out on fire in set four and showed a lot of meddle with a 25-12 victory to set up another five-set match with Adams State.  The two teams had a five-set battle in last season's RMAC semi-finals, a match won by Regis.

Caitie Breaux put down one of her game-high 22 kills to tie set five at nine apiece in a race to 15.  The Grizzlies scored the next four points before Regis responded with two to put the score at 13-11.  Adams State sided out the Rangers and shocked the Rangers 15-13.

The Grizzly defense was stout with 15 total blocks and limited Regis to a .173 attack percentage.  The Rangers had just six blocks in the match but limited Adams State to a .176 attack percentage.

Breaux led all with 22 kills and 23.5 points scored.  Katie Klein was next with 15 kills but had 11 attack errors.  Gina Morgan had eight kills and two blocks, while Lauren Flanagan put down seven kills and led the team with three blocks.

Sage Martinson led all Rangers with 15 digs, while adding six kills. Jaclyn Williamson notched another double-double with 51 assists and 12 digs, while Maya Kirkeby was right behind with 11 digs and a game-best four service aces.

The Rangers don't have time to dwell on the loss with CSU-Pueblo coming to the fieldhouse on Friday night and Western State on Saturday.
