Rangers Snap Two-Game Skid with 3-1 Win over CSU-Pueblo

Box Score

Denver, Colo.: The Regis volleyball team snapped a two-game skid with a 3-1 win over CSU-Pueblo in RMAC action.  The Rangers improve to 11-8 overall and 7-3 in the RMAC.

CSU-Pueblo (7-12, 4-6 RMAC) was playing point-for-point with Regis in set one and tied the game at 13 following an attack error by Sage Martinson.  The Rangers then figured out the Thunderwolf defense and scored 12-of-the-last 16 points to take set one 25-17.

CSU-Pueblo came out on fire in set two leading 9-1 before Regis started chipping away at the lead.  Backup setter Rebecca Sponcil replaced Jaclyn Williamson and seemed to give the Rangers a spark, not only offensively but defensively.  Sponcil joined with Lauren Flanagan on a block to tie the set at 21.

Katie Klein put down one of her 16 kills to put Regis in the driver seat at 24-23.  CSU-Pueblo's Morgan Wilkening seemed to give the Rangers an improbable comeback when she hit an attack out of bounds but what was lost in the Rangers celebration was the fact that the ball had been touched by one of the Ranger defenders at the net, which in turn gave CSU-Pueblo the point and a 24-24 tie.  CSUP then scored the next two points on a kill by Skylar Conner and a block of Klein by Brianna Bryant and Wilkening.

The Rangers came out of the extended break a blazing and left no doubt who the better team was tonight as they rolled in set three by a score of 25-12 and set four 25-13.  The Rangers limited the Thunderwolves to -.125 and .000 hitting in the final two sets for a .092 attack percentage for the match.

Gina Morgan had her second most kills on the season with 13 in just 19 attempts with just one error for a .632 attack percentage.  Morgan had five digs, two block assists and one service ace in one of her finies performances this season.

Again leading the way in kills for Regis was Caitie Breaux with 20, while also having a nice all-around game with five digs, three service aces and two blocks, one solo.  Klein joined her 16 kills with a team-high 14 digs.  Laura Schroeder, who saw her most action of the season, and Lauren Flanagan each put down four kills.  Flanagan was a force defensively with two solo blocks and four block assists.

Sponcil dished out season-best 40 assists and had one solo block and four block assists to go along with four digs and one service ace.

Regis will finish out their three-game home stance with a Saturday afternoon matchup with Western State.
