Box Score Anchorage, Alaska: The Regis men's basketball team won their first game of the season for the fourth season in a row with a 72-63 win over Alaska-Fairbanks at the AT&T Jamboree on the campus of Alaska-Anchorage.
Regis (1-0) fell behind early to the Nanooks (0-1) 13-4 just five minutes into the game. The Rangers started chipping away at the lead with the help of their inside prowess. Senior forward Jon Conley came off the bench to supply a much needed boost. Conley led the Rangers with 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
A Jarrett Green layup with 6:41 left in the first half gave the Rangers their second lead of the game. The two teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the first half and a jumper by Kevin Marshall with 1:32 left tied the game at 28, where it would stand at half.
Regis started the second half with an 8-0 run and took control of the game the rest of the way. A jumper by Andrew Kelly pulled Alaska-Fairbanks to within four at 63-59 with just 3:19 left in the game. Following two free throws from Conley, Kelly again cut the lead to four with 1:20 left.
Regis held the ball and late in the shot clock sophomore point guard Kevin Marshall put a nail in the coffin with a three pointer to push the lead to seven with under a minute left. Marshall secured the win by hitting four straight free throws to give Regis the 72-63 win.
Regis went 0-for-6 from three-point land in the first half but 5-for-7 in the second half. Both teams were fabulous from the free throw line with Regis hitting at an 86.7 percent clip ant UAF at 85.7 percent.
Marshall tied Conley for the team lead with 14 points, while Green had 13 points, pulled down six rebounds and led the team with four assists. Joseph Bodman grabbed seven boards and chipped in with 10 points while dishing out a team-best three assists.
Mike MacKelvie chipped in with nine points, while Kallen Link came off the bench to supply six points and two blocked shots.
Regis will play host Alaska-Anchorage tomorrow afternoon at 5:00 p.m., Mountain time.
