Box Score Denver, Colo.: The Regis University men's basketball team had one more tuneup before beginning RMAC play next weekend. The Rangers welcomed Northwestern Oklahoma State, who had a 24-6 run to open the second half and held on for the 67-62 win.
Regis (3-2) jumped out to an early 9-0 run, holding NWOSU (3-4) scoreless for nearly six minutes to begin the game. RU eventually stretched the lead to 19-7 following a layup by Mike MacKelvie with 10:16 left in the first half.
NWOSU, playing their second game in 17 hours after a loss to Colorado Mines last night, scored nine in a row to claw within three at 19-16. Senior Jarret Green made back-to-back jumpers in the final minute of the first half to give Regis a 30-24 lead heading into the break.
Northwestern State came out looking different and limited RU to just six points in the first eight minutes of the second half. Adrian Motley made a layup with 11:56 left to give NWOSU a 48-36 lead. The visitors kept Regis at bay and led 56-44 with just 7:25 left in the game.
Two Regis freshman, Spenser Reeb and Bryan Siefker put RU back in the game. Siefker made two big threes while Reed scored eight points on three free throws, a layup and the final three points on a three pointer to put Regis ahead 62-61 with just under a minute left in the game. That completed an 18-5 run the Rangers had over nearly six and a half minutes.
Lakeem Henderson of Northwestern Oklahoma State silenced the RU crowd with a tough jumper and a foul making the free throw to put them ahead 64-62. Regis had a couple more shots at the basket but were unable to get any to go and NWOSU cemented the win with a few free throws down the stretch for the 67-62 win.
Regis hurt themselves at the free throw line going just 8-for-17 (47.1 percent), while also getting out-rebounded 45-29 on the glass.
Jarrett Green led RU with 17 points but hit just 6-of-19 from the field. Reeb had 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting and grabbed a team-best seven boards. He also had two steals and a blocked shot. Joseph Bodman chipped in with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Kevin Marshall had seven and a team-high three assists.
Regis will now have a week off before facing #1 ranked Metro State on Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m.
