Rangers Drop Two in RMAC Preseason Tourney to Start Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DENVER, Colo.:  Regis University softball took two losses today in the RMAC Preseason tournament, dropping their record to 0-2 to start the season.

The Rangers put up a good fight in the first game, losing 9-6 to Colorado School of Mines, before falling 19-3 to UC-Colorado Springs in their second showing.

Mines put one run in during the first inning, but the Rangers were able to tie it up in the third.  Then in the fifth and sixth, the Orediggers put in five and three runs respectively to expand the gap.

The Rangers were able to score two runs in the fifth to close the gap and went in to the seventh inning looking to do some work.

Senior Shannon Massine reached first base on a bunt to start the bottom of the seventh.  She advanced to third on a single up the middle by freshman cleanup Nicole Hull and to home as junior Keala Bertulfo reached on an error.  Sophomore Sydney Gaffin brought Hull and Bertulfo in on a big single down the left field line.

That was all the Rangers could manage before the game ended.

Massine and sophomore Taylor Wilcox each had two hits and one RBI throughout.  Wilcox was good for a double and a triple for her two.  Gaffin finished leading the Rangers with two RBIs, while Hull had an RBI as well.

Gaffin received her first loss on the mound of the season after pitching 5.1 innings for Regis.  She struck out five and walked none in her 31 batters faced.

In the second game of the tournament, the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions jumped early, putting up 17 runs before the Rangers crossed one across the plate.

Hull started off the fourth inning with a double to left field.  Bertulfo then tripled up the middle to bring her around and put the Rangers on the board.

After that, junior transfer Sam Talmich tripled to right to put another on the board for the Rangers and Gaffin put down a sacrifice bunt to score Talmich and bring the Rangers up to three runs before closing out the game in the fifth inning.

Bertulfo and sophomore Rachel Illias each had two hits during the game, Bertulfo with another RBI for the day.  Senior Micheala Carbonneau, Talmich and Hull each had one hit against the Mountain Lions.

Hull, a right-hander in the circle for the Rangers, took her first loss after pitching 1.2 innings.

The Rangers will head across town on Saturday, February 2 to take on Metro State at 11:00 a.m. before returning to Regis to battle Adams State University at 3:00 p.m.
