Rangers Complete Sweep with Help of Ranger Defense

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DENVER, Colo.:  Regis baseball (12-4, 7-3 RMAC) completed a full sweep over Colorado Christian University today.

The Rangers put up 15 hits over the Cougar's four, leading them to a 10-3 win in the first game to start the day off right.

Junior left-hander Steven Brault put in 12 strikeouts, while allowing only one walk and four hits in his seven total innings.  Senior Hunter Aronson helped the Rangers with one strikeout of his own and no hits allowed in two innings on the hump.

Regis only had three scoreless innings in the first game.  They scored in the first inning after senior Nick Billinger doubled down the right field line and was brought in on a single to center field by junior Tony Piazza.

The Rangers scored three in the third and one in the fourth to bring the score to 5-2.  In the third, senior Cody Hastings picked up an RBI after singling to center field to bring in Billinger.  Brault followed with a single of his own to center field to score Hastings.  Junior Tony Piazza scored the third run on a wild pitch on the next play.

Billinger picked up an RBI for himself in the fourth, ripping a single to right center and scoring fellow senior Bob Terry.

Regis would score five more runs throughout the rest of the game.  In the sixth, senior Ryan Eustice crossed home on a walk and Terry scored on a wild pitch.

Freshman Ty Overboe lined an RBI single to center field in the seventh to grab his first RBI of the day.  Regis put two more insurance runs up in the eighth to put the Cougars under.

Piazza snagged another on a single through the left side, while junior Willy Gustin singled through the right side to pick up one of his own.

The second contest proved to be quiet on both sides throughout with the Rangers crossing two runs across the plate in seven innings.

In the third inning, Hastings put another single through the left side to score Eustice and in the fourth, Overboe attempted to steal second resulting in a bad throw from the Cougar pitcher that would score junior Tony Schicktanz from third.  The score would remain 2-0 for the duration of the game.

Regis shut down the Cougars, allowing only three hits in the game (seven total on the day).

Senior Nick Capra picked up the win after slinging five innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.  Jake Long earned his first save of the season after pitching two innings and allowing only one hit while striking out one as well.

Regis will take on CSU-Pueblo next week Friday through Sunday, March 22-24.
