Box Score 2 DENVER, Colo.: Regis softball (3-20, 2-10 RMAC) finished their weekend with a split on the day, first defeating nationally ranked #10 Colorado School of Mines 6-4 before falling 7-6 to pod hosts Metropolitan State University of Denver.
The Rangers broke the Orediggers 13 game winning streak by taking the first game
Against the Orediggers, the Rangers put up two runs in the second, third and sixth innings to secure the lead.
Sophomore Beth Petersen scored the first Ranger runs in the second inning after singling up the middle to bring around sophomore Taylor Wilcox and junior Sam Talmich and give Regis a 2-1 lead.
Mines answered in the third, but Regis was quick to grab the lead again in the bottom of the inning. Junior Shelby Wieman singled to right field, scoring both seniors Shannon Massine and Bre Backlund.
With the score 4-3, the Rangers would cross two more in the sixth to snag a 6-4 lead going into the last inning. Freshman Nicole Hull doubled to right field to cross Talmich and crossed the plate herself after Oredigger second baseman could not handle a hot grounder by sophomore Rachel Illias.
Sophomore right-hander Sydney Gaffin earned her first win after slinging 4.2 innings, allowing only five hits in the outing. Hull earned her first save of her collegiate career after going strong for 2.1 innings, striking out two and allowing two hits in 10 batters faced.
It was give and take in the second game against Metro State as the RoadRunners answered every run the Rangers scored.
In the first inning, Backlund singled up the middle to score Illias who had ripped a triple down the right field line.
The Rangers scored again in the third when sophomore Brianna Bogdajewicz crossed the plate on a ground out to the Metro second baseman by Massine.
Metro answered again to bring the score to an even 2-2 heading into the fourth inning. Senior Alyssa Beskid scored Hull on a fielder's choice grounder to the RoadRunner third baseman who made a play at second.
The RoadRunners put a big three runs in over the Rangers to respond, but Regis put three runs in themselves in the next inning to go up 6-5. Hull sent a double out to right center to score Illias and Massine. Talmich grabbed an RBI off a single to center field that scored Hull.
In a last big effort, Metro sent a walk off two-run homer over the fence to snag a late win.
Hull went 6.1 innings, striking out four and allowing 11 hits in her 33 batters.
Hull had a big day for the Rangers, going 3-4 at the plate with three RBIs, including one walk, one double and three runs. Backlund put in a 3-for-6 performance on the day, with one RBI and one walk.
Illias, Massine and Talmich all had two hits apeice on the day. Massine and Talmich collected one RBI each as well, while Illias put in two triples against Metro.
Regis will host Fort Lewis College next week on Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 23-24 for their next RMAC competition.
