Box Score 2 DENVER, Colo.: Regis softball finished out their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series with Chadron State with two wins today, advancing their record to 9-28 overall and 8-18 in the RMAC. It was an all around effort from the pitching staff and Ranger defense to RUs impressive offensive performance that secured the win.
In game one, CSC went up one run in the first inning. Regis answered with two of their own in the second to grab the lead.
RU started off with back-to-back doubles, first by junior Shelby Wieman to left field and then by freshman Nicole Hull to center field. Hull moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from junior Sam Talmich and moved on home after senior Micheala Carbonneau reached on a fielder's choice ball to the shortstop.
Chadron evened the score in the fourth, but Regis came right back with another run to go up 3-2 in the bottom of the inning. Senior Alyssa Beskid picked up the RBI off a single down the right field line that scored Hull (singled to start the inning).
CSC evened things up in the sixth, eventually sending the game into extra innings.
In the ninth, RU decided to shut things down, loading the bases with no outs and sending sophomore Taylor Wilcox to the plate. Wilcox sent a grounder to the second baseman and senior Bre Backlund broke for home. Although the Eagles tried to gun her out in the force, the senior second baseman beat the throw to end the game.
Right-hander Hull completed all nine innings, allowing nine hits and only three runs on the day while sitting down seven after facing 38 batters.
Backlund, Hull and senior Shannon Massine each put up two hits for the Rangers, while Beskid, Wieman and sophomore Rachel Illias each put up one apiece.
Regis came out hard again in the second game, putting one run up in the first inning, three in the third and two in the fifth to go up 6-0 over the Eagles.
In the first, Illias started things off with a double to left field. Wilcox singled to reach first and move Illias over, and both Rangers advanced again on the play off a fielding error by the center fielder.
Sophomore Brianna Bogdajewicz beat out a bunt single to begin the third inning, moved around the bases and scored on a single to right field by Illias. Wilcox then reached on a single to right field before Wieman doubled to center field to score both Illias and Wilcox.
RU snagged some insurance runs in the fifth with two outs, starting with a solo bomb to right field by Illias. After a CSC pitching change, Wilcox sent a hot grounder back up the middle that was too hot for the new pitcher to handle. Wieman hit another big double, this time to right field, to send Wilcox all the way around the bases.
Chadron tried to rally in the seventh, scoring one run before the Rangers shut them down, ending the game on a dirty strikeout by sophomore right-hander Sydney Gaffin.
Gaffin completed all seven innings, allowing only four hits and one run on the day. She struck out two in the effort as well.
Illias went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs at the plate while both Wieman and Wilcox went 2-for-3 on the day. Wieman had two RBIs in the game and Wilcox put up one. Bogdajewicz also had one hit in those seven innings.
The Rangers hit the road next weekend. They will head to CSU-Pueblo on Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21 and partake in doubleheaders starting at noon and 11:00 a.m. respectively.
