Box Score 2 Denver, Colo.: The Regis Rangers took the first two games of the four game series against Colorado School of Mines today. The Ranger pitching staff dominated the Mines lineup as they shut them out in both games. With the combination of solid pitching and an early Ranger lead, Regis was able to take the first two with ease.
In game one, the Rangers were led by an early explosion from the offense. Regis struck early and often by scoring eight runs in the first three innings of today's ballgame. In the first inning of the matchup, the Rangers came out strong by scoring three runs on five hits. After a Nick Billinger and Tony Piazza single, Steven Brault was able to bring home Billinger with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. After a Jon Shoutta single with runners on the corners, Tony Schicktanz scored Piazza on a single down the left field line. Ty Overboe then laced one up the middle to score Shoutta to bring home another run and increase the lead. In the bottom of the 2nd, Cody Hastings left the building with a shot over the left field fence scoring two and increasing the Ranger lead to 5-0.
That was all that starter Aaron Harms needed as he went six complete innings with no earned runs while allowing four hits. The ace of the pitching staff improves to 5-2 after a dominating performance of the Orediggers. Harms cruised through the line up with ease and had plenty of support from the potent offense. Alec Mielnicki came in for his first save of the season to finish off Harms' shutout performance. The pitching staff allowed only eight hits which proved to be the difference in game one.
As Ernie Banks once said, "Lets play two!" The Rangers were ready and fired up to take a clean sweep in today's double header. Regis picked up where they left off on the day by scoring three runs in the first inning. After back to back singles by Billinger and Hastings, Brault tripled with a missile down the left field line scoring both Hastings and Billinger. Jon Shoutta then drilled a single to right filed with Brault on the corner increasing the lead to 3-0 Regis.
Despite scoring another run in the 4th inning, the Regis pitching staff was set. Kirby Schwein went the distance with a shutout performance and struck out five batters. Schwein improves as the sole leader in the RMAC wins column as he is now 8-1. Schwein dominated the Orediggers with the complete game shutout performance. Billinger and Overboe led the team with a .500 batting average on the day while the hot hitting Shoutta and clutch hitting Brault combined for four of the Regis runs.
The completion of the series will be played out tomorrow as Regis honors the seniors with the first pitch scheduled at noon.
