Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Grand Junction, Colo.: Junior third baseman Tony Schicktanz came up with the biggest hit in his Regis career with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Colorado Mines 3-2 in a RMAC Tournament elimination game.
Regis senior starter Aaron Harms and Colorado Mines senior starter Blake Dunham dualed each other as each went the distance for their team. Harms (6-3) cruised through the first four innings before running into some trouble in the fifth inning. Travis Ramos hit a ball to short left field that Ryan Eustice stretched out to rob Ramos of a hit. Derek Skrdlant singled to center field and then Mines got helped out when Bobby Egeberg hit a ball to left center that Eustice misplayed putting runners at 1st and 2nd.
Harms struckout Zach Bothwell but Nate Olinger came up and hit a single to score Skrdlant. Harms got Jordan Williams to fly out to end the inning and minimize the damage.
Garrett Schirmacher got the fifth inning underway with a single and then Charlie Basil hit a triple scoring Schirmacher with no outs. Harms got Wallace to strikeout, one of his 12 strikeout victims on the day. Ramos came to the plate and Mines went for the suicide squeeze but Ramos wasn't able to get the bunt down and Regis was able to tag Basil out to dodge a bullet. Harms struckout Skrdlant two batters later to end the inning.
The Regis bats, who had just one hit through the first six innings, started to get to Dunham. Steven Brault hit a Texas-leaguer to right field and then advanced on a wild pitch. With two outs, Schicktanz was hit by pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Eustice was then able to redeem himself with a smash to left centerfield that got to the wall and scored by Brault and Schicktanz with the double to tie the game.
Harms went through nine innings and was quite the workhorse. He threw 160 pitches total and struckout 12 batters. One year ago today, Harms had an eerily similar outing with 13 strikeouts, his career high, allowing just six hits (the same as Mines had today) going the distance in the Rangers 3-0 RMAC Tournament win.
The drama would end in the bottom of the ninth. Piazza hit a single up the middle and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. With two outs and Piazza at second, Shicktanz came to the plate and laced a single to right center that got in between the two outfielders and easily scored Piazza for the walkoff.
Regis will play CSU-Pueblo today at 7:00 p.m.
Regis, now 28-17, had just five hits, with two of them coming from Brault.
